Jesus In The Garden Of Gethsemane

Christ, The Saviour

Jesus' hour has come: raised from the earth and glorified,
he draws all to himself. It is a strange hour in which everything
comes to signify its opposite: dying means living, losing means winning.
To increase and multiply each grain must fall on the ground and die;
but in dying it yields a rich harvest.Our sins had made us exiles from God's kingdom.

My Dear Friends,

When I went to lock the church on Tuesday evening I was really surprised and saddened to discover that the "Glastonbury Thorn" in the garden of rest had blown over. It was very windy on that day and a particularly strong gust must have taken it down.

It had been dying for some time and the fact that it had broken of at ground level, revealed just how far the decay had advanced.

Being mindful of the ashes interred around the base I made sure that I was present when the tree surgeons arrived to do their work so rest assured that it was done with the greatest care.

I hope that you will all study very carefully the two leaflets that you will be given at Mass this weekend. One contains all the details of our Holy Week and Easter services. The other deals with the tremendously important issue of "Assisted Suicide".

Such is the seriousness of this issue, that this leaflet is being distributed in every Catholic parish in England and Wales.

It almost goes without saying that our Catholic faith opposes such a bill; to quote our Cardinal, "Not because I have no sympathy," he said, "but I also have sympathy for the law which protects life." Or as the Abp. of Canterbury put it: "life is a gift from God that we cannot treat as a possession of our own to keep or throw away"

Please read the leaflet very carefully indeed and consider joining me in writing to your MP and members of the House of Lords to oppose this Bill.

Have a truly blessed week,
