My Dear Friends,
We have just come to the end of a very difficult and emotional week. All of us, to a greater or lesser degree have been affected by the horror that has taken place. We have been concerned for the safety of our children, our families and our friends and that is only right. But as followers of the Risen Christ we must also ask ourselves, how do we go forward, how can we show that darkness and evil can never triumph?
Each Sunday we gather together for Mass and every Mass is a celebration of the "Day of Resurrection", for we are an "Easter People" and "Alleluia" is our song.
But we do not go forward pretending that nothing has happened! For the reality of the cry "alleluia" is that it cannot be proclaimed unless we are aware of the sacrifice that went before it on Good Friday; there can be no resurrection without a crucifixion.
So firstly our hearts and prayers go out to those who have died - to those who have lost loved ones - to those who lie in hospital injured as a result of man's continuing inhumanity, and we also pray for ourselves; that in a society that is all too often darkened by the reality of sin, we may always be a source of Christ's "Paschal Light".
Let us remember that Jesus says to us: "Do not be afraid." So we must go forward in the knowledge that we are to be His light in the world. In the face of evil and violence, of hatred and murder we must be as St. Paul says -
