My Dear Friends,
In just ten days time we shall be celebrating Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, and for the 40 days that follow we shall try, as a community and as individuals, to grow closer to Christ.
There are many ways in which the Church encourages us to use these days. Traditionally through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
In a parish the main focus of our prayer is the offering of the Mass, (and rightly so) and I am always pleased to see the increase in the number of people who come to weekday Mass. But what about other forms of prayer?
The diocese provides resources for our prayer life and the new booklet Who Is My Neighbour? is on sale in the porch (£1) from today. These booklets are designed especially for us to use together, and many parishes have a number of groups meeting every week to do just that.
Spending time pondering the scriptures, opening our hearts to God, discussing what we believe with others, and praying together, is perhaps something we are not overly familiar with, but it is one of the most fulfilling and enriching ways there is for us to grow as Catholics.
So please do consider coming along to the Sunday evening prayer group or if that's not convenient let's try and arrange an alternative time and place! Let us truly become a community of fellowship and prayer.
God Bless.
