The Blessing of Easter Foods
THE EASTER VIGIL

My Dear Friends,

We now enter the most important week of the year. These holy days allow us to draw closer to our Lord as he goes up to Jerusalem to suffer and to die for our sins, and to rise again. We can never be worthy of His sacrifice, but at least we can journey with Christ from the Upper Room to Calvary, and then on to the glory of the Easter morn!

May I remind everyone that our Mass on Tuesday is at 9.30 am to allow those who wish to get to the cathedral for the Mass of the Chrism to do so. At the Chrism Mass -- which is usually the largest annual gathering of clergy and faithful most dioceses have -- the priests renew the commitments they made at their ordination. The Mass takes its name from the most eminent of the three holy oils, the Oil of Chrism.

While the Oil of the Sick, used for those who seek anointing, and the Oil of the Catechumens, which is imposed on those preparing for baptism, are simply "blessed," the Sacred Chrism is "consecrated," and all the priests present participate by extending their hands toward it at the prayer of consecration.

As part of the consecration, balsam is poured into the oil, which gives it a sweet smell to remind us of the "odour of sanctity" to which those people and things who are marked with it, and by extension all of us, are called to strive for. Finally the Chrism Mass also provides an opportunity to the faithful of the diocese to show support for their priests. All are welcome!

God Bless.
