The Advent Wreath

Our Liberation From Fear.

Fear is the most crippling of all the emotions
and there are many things in this world to make us afraid.
But today we lift up our souls to Christ who comes to deliver us from fear.
We stand erect, hold our heads high and dwell in confidence.

Children's First Reconciliation

My Dear Friends,

Once again we begin the great season of Advent. The focus of the entire season is the celebration of the birth of Jesus the Christ in his First Advent, and the anticipation of the return of Christ the King in his Second Advent. Thus, Advent is far more than simply marking a 2,000 year old event in history. It is celebrating a truth about God, the revelation of God in Christ whereby all of creation might be reconciled to God.

In this double focus on past and future, Advent also symbolizes our spiritual journey, as we affirm that Christ has come, that He is present in the world today, and that He will come again in power.

Expectation marks the season, and part of that expectation also anticipates a judgment on sin and a calling of the world to accountability before God.

So, we celebrate with gladness, yet knowing that there is also a sombre tone, as the theme of threat is added to the theme of promise.

Because of these dual themes, Advent is a time of preparation that is marked by prayer. Prayers of humble devotion and commitment, prayers from those walking in darkness who are awaiting and anticipating a great light.

The "Walk With Me" Advent booklets contain a series of daily prayers and meditations for you to use, and I commend them to you most highly as part of your own preparation for Christmas.

God Bless.
