My Dear Friends

Every year I reproduce the curious little line drawing;that you will find on the printable version of the newletter (see pdf at the top of the page). So let me remind you what it is all about.

This weekend we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord, the Revelation or 'showing of Christ to the Gentiles' which commemorates the visit of the Wise Men to the manger and is for many the real Christmas Day! This was also the case in England before the Reformation and on this day it was customary for the head of the household to mark the main doorway of the family home with the chalk symbols shown above.

This tradition symbolized the family's commitment to welcoming Christ into their homes throughout the coming year. The father wrote AD 20+C+M+B+12 = "Anno Domini 20 + Caspar + Melchior + Balthasar+12" meaning "in the year of Our Lord 2012 Caspar Melchior and Balthasar are protecting this house against all evil.

If you would like to offer this blessing for your home this year, do ask me for a copy of the special blessing prayers, and a small piece of 'blessed chalk'.

Finally, it is with great joy that we join with our school in celebrating their great year of Jubilee. Many children and staff will be taking an active part in our Sunday morning Mass, and afterwards they look forward to welcoming us back to school, for refreshments and a tour! Also on display is an exhibition of photos from the last 50 years, which I know will be of interest to all, and of some amusement to others! Come and see how you looked back then!!

God Bless.
